Travel Europe on a budget

Main Content

As a South African travelling to Europe our wallets often suffer! With the current shocking exchange rate an overseas holiday can get rather pricey! That's why Car Hire Brokers brings you the top 5 tips to travelling Europe on a budget so that you don't have to return to sunny South Africa without a Rand to your name.

◾ Manage your meals

A meal in Europe can be rather pricey especially when you dine out 2 to 3 times per day.
Instead of dining at expensive restaurants 3 times per day opt rather to try a local bakery or deli. Cheaper yet is the option of going to a grocery store to buy ingredients yourself - rather have a picnic in one of the lovely parks? You'll get a view and save money.

◾ Pick your accommodation location wisely

While accommodation near towns or cities may be expensive you will need to consider the travel costs of getting to and from those cities should you wish to stay further away - sometimes when you add these up it can cost more than the expensive accommodation all together! Do your research before booking. You could even consider staying at a hostel; these often have better rates and family rooms (great for bigger groups).

◾ Make use of cheaper public transport

Europe offers many different forms of public transport, which can save you quite a bit of money, however, there are still expensive ways to travel to be wary of. Flights can be costly, but look into a variety of airlines to compare quotes and get the best deal. When it comes to rail pre-paying for a package can earn you a great discount as can some other forms of transport such as busses. Take advantage of the great public transport that Europe has to offer!

◾ Investigate packages

You can save a lot of money by looking into various packages that you can buy overseas. Many companies have negotiated discounts with hotels, museums and site attractions, which can save you a whole lot of money!

◾ Budget realistically

It is important to have a budget in mind to try and stick to when overseas, however there are going to be some great attractions that you are not going to want to miss, and you might want to splurge on something lovely for yourself here and there! Make sure you budget a reasonable amount of money for occasions like this!
